They are not elected or nominated into office for their humour, but sometimes they make us laugh. On talk show interviews, speeches and often on presidential debates, our current leaders have uttered some of the funniest quotes that you would not have expected. As the trading week winds down, it may be time for a laugh or two, this time coming from the leaders we may despise or admire.

Donald Trump

After becoming president of the US just over a year ago, Trump is easily leading with the funniest quotes. You might hate his politics, but there is no denying he can be wildly entertaining. Sometimes, he might say something so nasty it makes you cringe, but a few times he can make you laugh. Of all the quotes I’ve heard from him, I especially like how he went against Hillary Clinton about gun control during a residential debate in September 2016.

Of course, this was underhanded because Hillary Clinton wasn’t calling for a ban on guns but for stricter gun control. Either way, it was one of the funniest quotes from a world leader, and the crowd certainly cheered when he said it.

Kim Jong-un

If Trump is Batman, the lately the North Korean leader has certainly become The Joker. Ever since the US and North Korean leaders got into a twitter war over nuclear weapons, there has been an endless list of funniest quotes from both sides. It was hilarious to hear Jong-un respond to Trump by saying “Whatever Trump might have expected, he will face results beyond his expectation. I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire”. While talk about World War III should not be a joke, it was just funny to hear someone call out Trump as a dotard.

Theresa May

She is not known for her humour. Indeed Prime Minister Theresa May may only have a good political head going for her. Nevertheless, every now and then she may have some witty banter that definitely makes it into this list of funniest quotes. I once burst out laughing when I heard her say on an interview with The Guardian in 2005, “Like Indiana Jones, I don’t like snakes. Though that might lead some to ask why I’m in politics.” However, the funniest thing about May has nothing to do with her words but the look she gave when she heard Lord Buckethead had got 249 votes. Priceless!

Emmanuel Macron

Before 2017’s French presidential elections, arguments between the two main contenders Macron and Le Pen had got really heated up. On one debate, Macron said of Le Pen, “The high priestess of fear is sitting before me”, accusing his opponent of using fear to gain votes. Later on in the same interview, he again responded when Le Pen said her government may scrap the euro partially. “A big company cannot pay in euros on one hand and pay its employees in francs on the other… this is the big nonsense of Marine Le Pen’s programme”.
